I had been in he "market" for a fic in the era of a younger Kallian for a bit, but the right idea wasn't forthcoming. Eventually, it finally arrived: a view into the "A Breathtaking Sight" Heart-to-Heart in which Melia states that she fell from the Sky Terrace once. Since she was young enough to have no memory of it or how she survived, it was the perfect chance to give Kallian something to do, and maybe look into his mindset at the time.
Another important factor was that I was just needing to develop the character of Melia's mother for a chapter of Artistic Focus (which turned out to be chapter 17). It was useful to bring her out to a "side project" to poke her a bit, rather than just leave her entirely in the theoeretical realm. At the time, Short-Lived Diamond was not a thing; if it were, I might have held this idea off to be used as a chapter in that story, rather than its own standalone one. But it's not like the same incident won't remain interesting from a different point of view.
