In the opening cinematic to World of Light, the undercooked story mode of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Shulk gets to be front and centre as he gets a vision that almost immediately happens and nothing can be done about. In the aftermath, Kirby is the only survivor.
Very quickly after this cinematic was revealed as a pre-release trailer, people started to gather together the idea that Shulk did something to help Kirby escape. At first I was just like "yeah cool", but eventually I had the idea of doing a fic about it.

Notes & Trivia
- Kirby's Mess Hall is a personal classic staple of any "central Smash Bros. location" setup. Statistically, you probably don't remember Camp Hyrule, where the idea is from.
- Kirby is written with shorter and simpler sentences in an attempt to evoke a more childish feel. Similarly, his dialogue is always "Kirby says X" rather than anything more varied.
- Shulk doesn't actually think everything tastes great, he just does that because he doesn't want to hurt Kirby's feelings.
- Both times that Shulk considers saying something, but doesn't, are the untaken paths of this Heart-to-Heart.
- It's too easy to set up Yoshi as Kirby's best Smash Bros. pal, since they're both originals and big eaters. I wasn't originally planning for him to participate, but it just made sense.
